From the President of the AUPN

Dear AUPN Colleagues:

As a service to the community of academic neurologists, the AUPN plans to notify our members of changes in leadership of academic departments. We start with a belated notice of Dr. Shefner’s transition last fall. If you have news you’d like us to share, please email the AUPN Executive Office at aupn@llmsi.com.

Sincerely,

David Fink, M.D.
President, AUPN

Barrow Neurological Institute has named Jeremy Shefner, MD, PhD, as the Institute’s associate director and chair of its Department of Neurology.

Dr. Shefner is an outstanding ALS physician and scientist with a research focus on biomarker development and clinical therapeutics of ALS. He co-founded and co-chaired the Northeast ALS Clinical Trials Consortium, the largest and most active ALS-dedicated group of its kind in the world.

Before coming to Barrow, Dr. Shefner served as the chair of the Department of Neurology at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, and as the director of the ALS Program and the Neurophysiology Laboratory at SUNY.

Dr. Shefner earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School, completed his residency at Harvard Longwood Neurology Training Program and was a fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital before joining the faculty at Harvard Medical School.

Dr Shefner received the 2014 Sheila Essey Award for ALS Research at the meeting of the AAN in May in recognition of his role as a principal investigator of numerous trials for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and leadership in clinical research that has been instrumental in accelerating the pace and improving the quality of clinical trials for the disease.

Dr. Shefner also served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the AUPN until last fall. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Shefner!
