Dr. Carmichael’s has a laboratory which studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neural repair after stroke and other forms of brain injury with a goal to develop new molecular therapies for stroke recovery.  This work has led to publications in high impact journals, as well as several patents and clinical trials in stroke.  His lab is funded by the NIH, the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, and other agencies.

Dr. Carmichael serves as Associate Editor of Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair and is the Director of the Adelson Program in Neural Repair, the largest and most productive scientific group in this fieldHe has served on NIH panels to review the intramural program, as a standing study section member and to develop long term funding priorities for dementia and stroke.
