
What is SIGN?
Student Interest Group in Neurology-SIGN is a group of medical students at your institution exploring the practice of neurology together. The organization is supported by the American Academy of Neurology and your medical school's Neurology Department or the Dean's Office of Student Affairs.
Activities
- Learn about different practice opportunities
- See demonstrations of procedures such as EEG and EMG
- Learn about subspecialties such as neuro-ophthalmology; pediatric neurology and behavioral neurology
- Have an opportunity to shadow a neurologist
- Interact with neurological patients
- Meet successful practicing neurologists
- Participate in periodic gatherings with others interested in neurology
- Pay nothing to participate
- Have an opportunity to compete for summer research scholarships in neurology sponsored by the AAN
- Learn about current happenings at the AAN
- Find out about FREE student membership in the AAN
What Are the Goals for SIGN?
- Foster interest in neuroscience, particularly neurology, by providing opportunities for medical students to participate in activities related to the field
- Increase Neurologic knowledge of medical students
- Create an interest in the AAN and a relationship with the medical students who can be regarded as junior colleagues and future AAN members
What is the Time-frame for Beginning SIGN Chapters?
The intent will be to begin forming chapters during the fall of the 1998-1999 academic year. The long term goal is a SIGN chapter in every accredited US and Canadian medical school program.
Who Will Implement the Chapter?
The medical school faculty may need to take the lead to initiate the chapter, but it is hoped that it will become student driven.
