From the President of the AUPN

Alissa Willis, MD has been named the Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Her appointed was effective September 1st.

Dr. Willis comes to UMMC from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, where she was the assistant professor of medicine and a staff neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute and Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis.

Dr. Willis serves as the associate program director for the Cleveland Clinic’s neurology residency program, which is 40 residents strong, and she is medical director of the Mellen Center, the largest MS center in the nation.

A Jackson native, Dr. Willis is a chemical engineering graduate of Mississippi State University and received her doctor of medicine from UMMC. She graduated summa cum laude, receiving the Waller S. Leathers Award and the Neuroscience Critical Care Achievement Award.

Dr. Willis completed her internship and her neurology residency at UMMC, serving as chief resident. She was named Alpha Omega Alpha Resident Teacher of the Year and Neurology Resident of the Year at the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson. She also received the Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Willis was a clinical neuroimmunology fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, followed by a year of private practice in Jackson. She was named Staff Teacher of the Year for the Cleveland Clinic Department of Neurology and also received the American Academy of Neurology’s A.B. Baker Teacher Recognition Award.

She serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of MS Care and on the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America Healthcare Advisory Council. She has been involved in developing quality measures for multiple sclerosis as part of an AAN workgroup.
