UT Health San Antonio School of Medicine has initiated a national search for an innovative and highly collaborative leader to serve as the next Dean, Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs, UT Health San Antonio located in San Antonio, Texas.
The Dean and Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA) is the principal leader and advocate for the Lozano Long School of Medicine’s programs and guides medical education, research and clinical care operations. The Dean leads the development of ethical educational, research, and clinical talent within the framework of The University of Texas Board of Regent’s operating philosophy as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
Performance in this academic leadership role is judged on the SOM’s reputation for excellence in training physicians, on its quality and productivity in patient care and on its contributions to medical research and to the education and training of future physicians and scientists. The Dean and VPMA must achieve these results in a fiscally responsive manner consistent with approved strategic objectives and operating plans. The successful candidate will be fully engaged in the recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty members with a keen sensitivity to cultural issues.
UT Health San Antonio is one of six health institutions in the University of Texas Health System, is the major source of health professions education and life sciences research in South Texas and is major center for patient care in South Texas. UT Health San Antonio is a comprehensive academic health center with 3,250 students enrolled in five schools: the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Dentistry, the School of Nursing, and the School of Health Professions. The UT Health Lozano Long School of Medicine consists of more than 1300 full time faculty, 1240 volunteer and adjunct faculty, 850 students and 800 residents in 60 ACGME approved graduate medical education programs.
The new Dean and VPMA must be an experienced academic physician leader whose past achievements and current leadership abilities will inspire respect, inclusiveness, collaboration and cooperation from talented faculty, staff, students, alumni, community leaders, elected and appointed officials and from other UT Health San Antonio stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have an MD or equivalent and have scholarly and professional achievement meriting the academic rank of Professor with a continuing appointment in the appropriate clinical department.
