Summer has swiftly passed and fall meeting season is quickly approaching. We look forward to an outstanding AUPN Fall Program, once again held in conjunction with the American Neurological Association Annual Meeting (October 17-19). Both the AUPN and ANA meetings are again virtual this year. The AUPN will be partnering with the ANA and using their virtual platform. While a paid registration for the ANA meeting will be required to access the AUPN sessions, there is no additional fee for the AUPN educational offerings. American Neurological Association Registration is available through the ANA website.
The AUPN offerings include three Chairs Sessions, the Small Neurology Department Networking Session, and the Meet the Chairs Session. The ANA and AUPN are jointly hosting the virtual academic neurology Career Fair.
The first Chairs Session, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion: What does it take to make real progress and how do you improve the pipeline?, is moderated by Dr. Annapoorna Bhat Ramachandra (University of New Mexico) and Dr. Michel Torbey (University of New Mexico) and presents an analysis of the challenges of, and strategies for improving equity, diversity, and inclusion in academic neurology. This Session is scheduled for Sunday, October 17, from 12:15pm - 1:15pm ET.
The second Chairs Session, Social Media and Web Presence: How do you make your internet presence effective, and how do you handle social media
“Surprises”?, is moderated by Dr. Richard O’Brien (Duke University) and explores the use of social media and internet tools for more effective resident and faculty recruiting, teaching, reputation building and clinical care, as well as how to deal with unexpected issues in the digital world. This Session is scheduled for Monday, October 18, from 10am - 11am ET.
The third Chairs Session, Supply and Demand in Neurology Subspecialties: How can you match the trajectories of trainees to the needs of the present and future?, is moderated by Dr. Larry Goldstein (University of Kentucky) and will explore the challenges and rewards of mentoring trainees towards the most viable and most needed subspecialties. This Session is scheduled for Tuesday, October 19, from 10am - 11am ET.

The Small Department Networking Session is moderated by Dr. Sanjay P. Singh (Creighton University), and provides a forum for Chairs of smaller departments to meet, discuss mutual challenges and share best practices. This session is scheduled for Monday, October 18, from 11:30am - 12:30pm ET.
The AUPN Meet the Chairs Session is a Q&A forum featuring leading academic neurology chairs, including Dr. John Greenfield (University of Connecticut), Dr. Louise D. McCullough (University of Texas, Houston), Dr. Matthew Fink (Weill Cornell) and Dr. Clifton Gooch (University of South Florida). This session is scheduled for Tuesday, October 19, from 11:15am - 12:15pm ET.
The annual ANA-AUPN Virtual Fall Career Fair provides an opportunity for the leaders of the nation's top academic Neurology departments to meet with meeting attendees and discuss career opportunities at their institutions. The fair is still open for registration and will include an improved online platform which more closely parallels the in-person experience. Once again, the AUPN is offering complimentary registration to the first 20 chairs who apply (must be members of both the AUPN and ANA) through this request form. After the first 20 booths are taken, a fee will apply. Registration is open through September 30th and the career fair will be held on Sunday, October 17 from 7:45pm - 8:45pm ET.
One of the major changes wrought by the COVID pandemic is the shift to virtual recruitment for both residents and faculty. This month’s AUPN Leadership Minute, “The Challenges of Virtual Residency Interviews,” is presented by Dr. Nina Browner (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and moderated by Dr. Alissa Willis (University of Mississippi).
