Course Director:
Douglas J. Gelb, MD, University of Michigan
Faculty:
Rachel Marie E. Salas, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Jeff A. Kraakevik, MD, Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine
Course Description:
The 2017 Clerkship Directors workshop will have a point/counterpoint format. The workshop faculty will take strong opposing positions on various “controversies” related to practical aspects of clerkship structure. After the faculty members have presented their arguments (as forcefully as possible in 5 minutes or less) the workshop participants will discuss the topic in small groups. After 15 minutes, the small groups will report their conclusions. There will be 10 minutes of large group discussion and concluding comments before proceeding to the next topic of controversy.
Controversy Topics:
1) The neurology clerkship should emphasize patients with common conditions likely to be seen in general medical practice, such as headache and back pain
Pro: Dr. Salas
Con: Dr. Gelb
2) The neurology clerkship should be offered in different formats for students with different career goals
Pro: Dr. Gelb
Con: Dr. Kraakevik
3) The NBME subject exam in neurology is a valuable component of evaluating students on the neurology clerkship
Pro: Dr. Kraakevik
Con: Dr. Salas
