Leadership Minute
This month’s leadership minute, entitled “Funding Resident & Fellow Positions,” provides an overview of how the U.S. Graduate Medical Education funding model works. Presented by Tom Frontera (Residency Program Director, Univ. of South Florida) and introduced by Clifton Gooch (AUPN Past Predident and Chair, Univ. of South Florida), the program explains government reimbursement to medical centers for GME positions and discusses possible mechanisms to increase funding lines in your program. For hospitals under the CMS position cap, expanding your residency could involve getting FTEs reassigned from programs that are not using them. Alternative funding sources include VA funding lines, or even self-funded programs. Convincing hospitals to fund additional positions requires significant effort and data to support the value of additional positions to enhance high value clinical programs.
