Dr. Giraldo is a critical care and vascular neurologist focused on clinical care, teaching and research. Working with medical students, residents and fellows while attending to patients has been personally important for Dr. Giraldo and has provided the

most valuable ideas in research and clinical program development during his distinguished career.

He was born in Lima, Peru where he completed his medical studies at Major National University of San Marcos (“Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos”). Dr. Giraldo received his M.D., followed by four years of neurosurgery residency in Lima where he completed a visiting fellowship in vascular neurosurgery at the University of Miami. Here he spent two more years doing research in cerebrovascular disease and trauma. Dr. Giraldo completed his internship at Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital and a neurology residency at the University of Vermont followed by a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease and neurological critical care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

After completion of his training, Dr. Giraldo was named Co-Director of the Stroke and Neurocritical Care Program at Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He served as Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Stroke and Neurocritical Care at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis where he also completed a Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr. Giraldo worked as Assistant Professor at Mayo Clinic Division of Critical Care Neurology in Rochester, and Associate Professor at Drexel University and Director of the Stroke and Neurocritical Care Programs at Hahnemann University Hospital. Dr. Giraldo became a Professor of Neurology at the University of Central Florida and was the inaugural Director of its Neurology Residency Program in Greater Orlando prior to moving to California University of Science and Medicine.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Giraldo in his new role.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 offering of Training in Neurotherapeutics Discovery and Development for Academic Scientists (NEUROTHERAPEUTICS COURSE), which will be held March 25-28, 2019. DEADLINE: December 10, 2018

As researchers, we often acknowledge the important role that our mentors have in guiding us, but these mentorship achievements are rarely incentivized in tangible ways. To recognize the contributions and importance of outstanding mentors, the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has established the NINDS Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship, named in honor of former NINDS Director Dr. Story Landis, for her exceptional influence on scientific research and mentorship. Now in its second year, this year’s award nominations are due on Saturday, December 8, 2018. Read more about the 2018 winners here, or through the NINDS press release.

The Landis Award provides $100,000 to support selected investigators’ efforts to foster the career advancement of trainees. Nominations will only be accepted from a nominee’s current or former mentees. This year, we seek nominations for faculty mentors who are 13-20 years from the start of their first tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions.

Please consider nominating an outstanding mentor by completing this form no later than Saturday, December 8, 2018.

Chairs, please don't forget to pay your 2019 dues! Details regarding what your dues covers and information on how to renew can be found here.
