Northward Ho!
When the AUPN was originally incorporated in 1968, the goal was to serve as a forum for the academic leaders of neurology to foster the development of our educational, research and patient care programs in accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada. Yet historically there has been little involvement of academic programs north of the border. We have recently reached out to expand our active membership to include more of our Canadian neighbors.
Our newest member institution is the University of British Columbia, headed by Dr. A. Jon Stoessl. The UBC Division of Neurology, one of the largest divisions in the Department of Medicine, is internationally recognized for its clinical and research programs in multiple sclerosis, neurodegenerative disorders and stroke, and provides tertiary care for patients throughout the province. Their academic programs generated more than 200 publications and research funding over $20M in recent years. UBC faculty supervise students and trainees from undergraduate to postgraduate students and clinical and research fellows, and their Neurology residency is the one of the largest in the country. UBC joins McGill University, our other active Canadian member institution, headed by Dr. Guy Rouleau.
If you know of other Canadian Institutions that would benefit from joining AUPN, please email contact information to neuro@aupn.org.

AUPN Fall Chair Sessions
We are excited to reveal more details about the AUPN’s Fall Education Programs, which will be held at the American Neurological Association Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL from October 22 – 25, 2022 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. As in prior years, we will host three career development sessions designed for Department Chairs (or those who aspire to be chairs):
On Sunday, October 23 from 7:30am – 9:00am CT, our first session will focus on Governmental Advocacy for Neurology Departments. This program will feature Derek Brandt, Director of Congressional Affairs for the American Academy of Neurology and Eddie L Patton, Jr, MD of Vyripharm Enterprises, and will review the roles, process and optimal tactics for governmental advocacy at the state and national levels. The session will be moderated by Larry B Goldstein, MD.
Monday’s 7:00 AM program will examine the changing financial structures associated with neurology departments in a session entitled Neuroscience Service Lines: What’s the Best Model? Drs. Sanjay Singh (Creighton University) and Sarah Benish (University of Minnesota) will discuss the best models for a Neuroscience Service Line, how to align interests between neurology, neurosurgery, and other departments, and the most effective leadership structure. Dr. Jun Li (Houston Methodist/Cornell Weill) will host the session.
Our final Chair session at 7:00 AM Tuesday morning will be on Chair Evaluations of Faculty. Dr. David Greer (Boston University) and William "Marty" Martin (DePaul University) will help physician leaders to improve their feedback skills and provide insight into goal setting, defining expected behavior, optimizing communication tools and managing faculty expectations. Dr. Martin is a clinical psychologist and has taught courses in physician leadership for new chairs. The session will be moderated by Dr. Michel Torbey (University of New Mexico).

Additional AUPN Programs at the ANA
The AUPN and ANA will jointly host the annual “Meet the Chairs” Interactive Workshop on Monday, October 24 from noon to 1 PM CT. Speakers will include Drs. Frances E. Jensen, MD (University of Pennsylvania and President of the ANA), Amy Brooks-Kayal, MD (UC Davis), Sanjay Singh, MD (Creighton University), and L. John Greenfield (University of Connecticut and AUPN President). Chairs will discuss the opportunities and challenges of managing a clinical department and field questions from the audience. Dr. Greenfield will moderate.
Now that we are again meeting in person, the AUPN will host its Networking Lunch for Small Academic Departments on Tuesday, October 25 from 11am – 12:30pm. Smaller departments face unique challenges, meeting teaching and clinical service responsibilities with a limited number of faculty while protecting time for research and career development. This lunch provides an opportunity for chairs of smaller departments to meet, discuss issues and share strategies. The definition of “small” is subjective, though most participants represent departments with fewer than 25 faculty members.
Finally, we are happy to announce that the 5th Annual ANA-AUPN Career Fair is open for registration! Be sure to reserve your booth now for Sunday, October 23 from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm CST. The Career Fair provides an opportunity for the leaders of the nation's top academic neurology departments to meet with attendees and discuss training and career opportunities at their institutions. Space is limited - click here to reserve your spot today!
The first 20 registrations by those who are member of both the AUPN and ANA will be fully supported by the AUPN, and any additional registrants may be entitled to a reduced display rate.
To attend any of these ANA programs, registration for the ANA meeting is required. Sign up today!

VA Directors’ Workshop
We will also host our Second Annual Virtual Workshop for VA Neurology Directors this fall, on a Friday, October 7 from 2pm - 4pm CT. This workshop is specifically targeted for VA Directors, and should help those in that position with the specific challenges of working in the VA environment. The focus for this event is Neurology Centers of Excellence: What they can do for you and the Veterans you serve. The session will introduce the VHA-funded Centers of Excellence (COEs) in Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy and Headache, describe the services offered in each of the mission areas, and connect participants with COE staff serving their region. Each presentation will be followed by an open discussion to elicit suggestions for how each COE can better serve the field. The session will be hosted by Dr. Sharyl Martini (Baylor) who is the National Director for Neurology for the Veterans Health Administration and Dr. Glenn Graham, also of the Veterans Health Administration.
