Message from John England, MD, AUPN President
Most of us are winding down the 2024-2025 academic year with medical student and resident/fellow graduations. This is always a time of mixed emotions since some residents/fellows leave, but others start anew. All of us can be proud that we continue to train outstanding clinical neurologists and scientists who will lead us into the future. Please join me in congratulating these exceptional individuals!
Some highlights for this month are listed below.

New Chair of Neurology
Dr. Joe Verghese was appointed Professor and Chair of Neurology at Stony Brook Medicine on October 14, 2024. Dr. Verghese is an internationally known cognitive and behavioral neurology expert. After graduating from St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India, Dr. Verghese did his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Neurology in the United Kingdom. He completed his neurology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) in 1998, followed by his fellowship training in Neurophysiology and Aging & Dementia a year later. In 2001, he earned his MS with Distinction in Clinical Research.
Dr. Verghese spent more than two decades at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) in New York, where he served as a tenured Professor of Neurology & Medicine and the school’s inaugural Chief of the Division of Cognitive & Motor Aging in the Department of Neurology. He was also the Murray D. Gross Memorial Faculty Scholar in Gerontology at Einstein and a former Chief of Geriatrics for Montefiore Medical Center’s Department of Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Verghese was the Founding Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for the Aging Brain, an interdisciplinary clinical dementia and cognitive assessment center designated as a Center of Excellence in Alzheimer’s disease by the New York State Department of Health in 2016. He has authored or co-authored > 300 articles, reviews, and chapters. He has been continually funded by NIH since 2002.

Save the Date for the AUPN Annual Meeting
Please join us for the 2025 AUPN Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. This focused, one-day event is especially tailored for leaders in academic neurology, including chairs, vice-chairs, program directors, associate program directors, clerkship directors, associate clerkship directors, and women leaders.
Building on the success of the inaugural meeting, AUPN2025 offers robust programming designed to inspire, educate, and connect. Our Leadership Minute for this month is entitled, “How to Lead a Small Neurology Department to Big Success”. The host is Dr. Aashit Shah from Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic. The speaker is Dr. Sal Cruz-Flores from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, Texas. They will discuss how leading a department depends highly on context. Small departments pose specific challenges. This episode provides insights and tips on leading a small department successfully.
