Program Directors’ Workshop. On Friday, January 27th from 2pm – 4pm CST, the Program Director’s Liaison Group and the AUPN will host our annual Program Director’s Workshop. This year’s session is entitled “Managing the Circus: Juggling All the Responsibilities of a Program Director.” This session will discuss how to prioritize and manage the varied roles and responsibilities of a program director to create a successful residency program. The meeting will be hosted by Alfred T. Frontera, Jr. (U. South Florida) and distinguished guest speaker Ralph F. Józefowicz (U. Rochester) with panelists Miya Bernson-Leung (Boston Children’s/Harvard) and Rebecca Matthews (Emory).
Clerkship Director’s Workshop. On Friday, February 3rd from 2pm – 4pm CST, the AUPN will host our annual program for neurology clerkship directors, focused this year on “Navigating the Continuum of Feedback.” This interactive program, moderated by Erin Furr Stimming (UT Houston) with presentations by Marie Carl Eugene (UConn Health) and Doris Kung (Baylor) will discuss best practices when providing verbal and written feedback as part of formative and summative evaluations to medical students.
By the time you read this, the annual Department Chairs and Program Directors’ Forum on Friday, January 20, 2023 will already be history. The meeting this year was moderated by AUPN President-elect John England (Tulane) and focused on four topics: the ACGME Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER, Stacy Fisher), creating and maintaining diversity and inclusion in GME training (Amparo Gutierrez), ACGME effort (FTE) requirements for program directors and coordinators (Erica Schuyler and Brian Copeland), and an update on neurology fellowship application timelines and processes by the entire panel.
A recording of these sessions and slides will be available on the AUPN website the week after each live session.

Neuroimaging Fellowship Survey
While most neurologists rely on their radiology colleagues for interpretation of neuroimaging, there is also a fellowship pathway by which neurologist can gain competency to generate (and bill for) CNS imaging reports. In many institutions, this is challenging political issue between Neurology and Radiology departments, hence fellowship training for neurologists in neuroimaging is a complex landscape. The United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) is conducting a brief 2-minute survey of AUPN members to identify potential barriers to the growth and development of Neuroimaging fellowship training programs. Please take a few minutes to share your perspective on this controversial issue by Friday, February 10th.

Leadership Minute
This month’s AUPN Leadership Minute highlights the exceptional career path of Allison Brashear, MD, MBA who is currently the Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean of the Jacob’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. In the video entitled “Transitioning from Chair to Vice President and Dean” introduced by Alissa Willis (Univ. of Mississippi) she describes her scientific career spanning more than three decades as a physician-scientist, physician-educator, and administrator, and relates her journey from Chair of Neurology at Wake Forest to Dean of UC Davis and now Vice President of Health Sciences at the University of Buffalo. Her example should provide inspiration to those who aspire to life in the Dean’s chair and beyond.
