House on Fire: It’s Time to Sound the Alarm on Burnout in Neurology

Course Description:
Physicians experience burnout at higher rates than other professionals and among physicians, neurologists are particularly susceptible to burnout.  Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and career dissatisfaction and has adverse effects on both physician and patient health and well-being.  This course will review the signs and symptoms of burnout and examine some of the potential drivers of the burnout epidemic among neurologists in training and in practice.  Finally, the course will discuss best practices of how to prevent, mitigate and treat burnout within the neurology community.   

Learning Objectives:  

  1. Be able to define “burnout” and recognize its signs and symptoms in colleagues and trainees.
  2. Understand the primary divers of burnout on the individual, organizational and national levels.
  3. Discuss effective strategies to prevent, mitigate and treat burnout.

Course Description:
The AUPN will hold a New Chairs Mentoring Lunch where senior mentor Chairs (3+ years’ experience) will meet with new Chairs (0-3 years’ experience) to advise and help with the transition into their new role. The focus of the lunch will be a general discussion on understanding what the new Chairs believe would be of value to them, as well as answering any specific questions.
